Who are these czars anyway ?
By some accounts, Obama has nearly three dozen czars in his administration, managing everything from closing the Guantanamo Bay detention facility to ending the genocide in Darfur.
But first, what is a "czar"? The term "czar" is not new, as it originated in Bulgaria in the tenth century and was the official term for supreme rulers in Eastern Europe until the era of Lenin. However, when used in the news and by politicians in America, the meaning of the word hasn't really changed. When you hear that a czar has been created or appointed in modern day, it means the following:
This person is immune to subpoena, congressional oversight and review
This person answers to the President, and the President only
This person need not be approved or confirmed by any other branch
This person has supreme rule over the agencies which he or she is to oversee
This person's salary is not disclosed
The budget which this person oversees is not to be reviewed, and collectively the Obama czars oversee up to $2 Trillion
Energy czar--Carol Browner,
Browner married Michael Podhorzer, a specialist in health-care issues at Citizen Action,[3] in the 1980s.[7] They have a son, Zachary, born 1987.[3][7]
Browner is now married to former Congressman Thomas Joseph Downey. The marriage, his second, her third,[26] took place on June 21, 2007 in Riverhead, New York.[16] Downey heads a lobbying firm that includes clients involved in energy policy.[5] In 2006 she and Downey collaborated on behalf of Dubai Ports World, but were unable to convince Senator Charles Schumer to their view during the Dubai Ports World controversy.[27]

Infotech czar --Vivek Kundra
President Barack Obama's [ Images ] Indian- American infotech czar Vivek Kundra [ Images ] was on Wednesday 'reinstated' to his job at the White House, five days after he went on leave following Federal Bureau of Investigation's raids at his previous office, in a corruption case related to employees working there.
Two individuals, Yusuf Acar and Indian-American Sushil Bansal, were arrested by the FBI in connection with the corruption charges. Meanwhile, a federal judge ordered continued imprisonment of Yusuf Acar, who was the acting chief security officer in DC's technology office after Kundra.
Acar is accused of defrauding the city through a sophisticated bribery and fraud scheme. Acar was arrested along with Sushil Bansal, president and CEO of the Advances Integrated Technologies Corp and a contractor. Bansal was later released but ordered not to conduct overseas financial transactions or leave the region.
Faith-based czar-- Joshua DuBois
For 41 hours, he stood on the sidewalk.
He was just 17 years old, a freshman at Boston University, and he didn't know what else to do. A jury in New York had just acquitted the four police officers whose 41 bullets had killed an unarmed Guinean immigrant named Amadou Diallo.
So Joshua DuBois wrote "NO MORE" on a placard, planted himself on an expanse of pavement along Commonwealth Avenue, in front of a memorial to Martin Luther King Jr., and stood there - 41 hours for 41 shots.
Health reform czar - Nancy-Ann DeParle,
She served as the director of the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) from 1997 to 2000, administering the Medicare program for the Clinton administration, and before then worked at the Office of Management and Budget.
Msnbc.com reported that she was paid more than $6 million, and served as a director of half a dozen companies that faced federal investigations, whistleblower lawsuits and other regulatory actions. Many of these companies have a stake in the health care reform that she is leading.[5]
She has also been a Commissioner on the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC). and get this, She is married to Jason DeParle, a reporter for The New York Times.[
New TARP czar --Herb Allison
President Barack Obama is expected to tap Fannie Mae Chief Executive Herb Allison to head the government's $700 billion financial-rescue program, TARP, youre kidding me ?
Stimulus accountability czar-- Earl Devaney,
President Barack Obama plans to announce Monday that a former Secret Service agent who helped expose lobbyists’ corruption at the Interior Department is his pick to oversee the $787 billion economic stimulus plan.
Obama is set to name Earl Devaney as chairman of the new Recovery Act Transparency and Accountability Board, an administration official said Sunday. Vice President Joe Biden also will be given a role coordinating oversight of stimulus spending.
So, how much of what Devaney does will be overruled by Biden ?

Czar Kenneth Feinberg has the authority to set the pay scale for executives at any company receiving government money (and how many aren’t, these days?). Czar Feinberg has the power to say that someone’s pay is excessive, and to make companies cut that pay until the czar is pleased.
