Democrat Representative Parker Griffith Switches to GOP by Brad Jackson; from

"This could be big. Ahead of key votes in the House on the incoming Senate healthcare bill, Alabama Democrat Parker Griffith is switching sides and becoming a Republican.
According to two senior GOP aides familiar with the decision, the announcement will take place this afternoon in Griffith’s district in northern Alabama.

The switch represents a coup for the House Republican leadership, which had been courting Griffith since he publicly criticized the Democratic leadership in the wake of raucous town halls during the summer.
Rep. Griffith is practicing physician, a radiation oncologist, and is expected to list the Democrats healthcare reform legislation as the final catalyst for his switch. He is, “expected to cite his medical background as his authority on the subject.” It surely doesn’t help Democratic arguments that this policy is good for the American people when a a practicing doc is switching from their party over the matter. A new poll also shows that the public is against the plan.
Griffith represents a district in Huntsville, Alabama that has been historically Democrat, but is home to a conservative voter base. Several Republicans already had thrown their hat in the ring to challenge Griffith in what would surely have been a perilous election for him in 2010. I wouldn’t count on all of them getting out of the race now that he’s switching parties, but it should make for a more winnable election for Griffith.
The 2010 elections could shape up to be a really tough year for Congressional Democrats if Griffith’s departure and recent Democrat retirements are indicative of a trend among their party. Republicans retook the house in 1994 in part by taking advantage of an environment not unlike this."
